Communion Tokens.

Communion Tokens have had a very important part in Presbyterian life. They were coin-like objects in lead given by the elders to members to admit to Communion those they considered worthy to receive the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.

Early tokens usually have the Minister’s initials, thus, on our own tokens of the Second congregation have "RM" for either the Rev Robert Morrison 1819 - 1860, or Rev Robert Mitchell 1861 - 1882. On the reverse side is the first letter of each syllable of the name of the congregation as "MH", for Markethill. (see photographs above).
