Love in
Action
Dear
children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in
truth. 1 John 3:18 .
A young woman
hiking in the mountains encountered another woman hobbling down a mountain
trail. On one foot she wore a makeshift shoe constructed from twigs
wrapped with a strip of cloth.
‘I lost one
boot crossing a stream’ she explained, ‘Hope I can get down the
mountain before dark.’
The first hiker
reached into her own rucksack and took out a gym-shoe. ‘Wear this’
she said, ‘You can post it to me when you get home.’
The woman
gratefully accepted the shoe and set off down the path. A few days later
the shoe arrived in the post with a note saying, ‘I passed several
people who noticed my predicament and offered me sympathy, but you’re the
only one who offered any help. It made all the difference. Thanks for
sharing your shoe with me.’
The Bible says
Christian love can be seen and touched – it’s tangible. Our act of love
may be as sacrificial as the Good Samaritan’s care for an injured man ,
(Luke 10:30-37) or as small as a cup of cold water
given in Jesus’ name (Matthew 10:42).
Real love takes
action. The Bible says ‘Dear children, let us not love with words or
speech but with actions and in truth.’ (1 John 3:18) .
Christian,
perhaps on your path of life today, you’ll meet a hobbler, offer him the
love of Christ, in action.
Out in the highways and byways of life,
Many are weary and sad;
Carry the sunshine where darkness is rife,
Making the sorrowing glad.
Make me a
blessing, make me a blessing,
Out of my life may Jesus shine;
Make me a blessing, O Savior, I pray,
Make me a blessing to someone today.
Tell the sweet story of Christ and His love,
Tell of His pow'r to forgive;
Others will trust Him if only you prove
True, every moment you live.
Give as 'twas given to you in your need,
Love as the Master loved you;
Be to the helpless a helper indeed,
Unto your mission be true.
